Isaac Judah Schmelkes

Isaac Judah Schmelkes was a prominent figure, however, available information pertains to his father Rabbi Yitsḥak Yehudah Schmelkes, a renowned talmudic scholar born in 1827 in Lemberg, Galicia. His father was Ḥayyim Samuel Schmelkes, and the family claimed descent from Eleazar b. Samuel Schmelke Rokeaḥ.

Rabbi Yitsḥak Yehudah Schmelkes served as the head of the rabbinical court in Lviv from 1869 to 1893, earning recognition for his expertise. His notable work, Beit Yiẓḥak, provided commentary on the four parts of the Shulḥan Arukh and received widespread acclaim. As a result, he became a sought-after authority on halakhic questions, consulted by many prominent scholars of his time.
