Paula Ackerman

First female rabbi in the United States

Paula Ackerman was a trailblazing figure in American Judaism, recognized as the first female rabbi in the United States. Her pioneering work began in 1951 when she took on a leadership role at the Beth Israel congregation in Meridian, Mississippi, a position she held until 1953. This marked a significant milestone as she became the first woman to assume spiritual leadership of a mainstream American Jewish congregation.

Ackerman's contributions to Judaism extended beyond her congregational leadership. She also played a key role in the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, where she led the National Committee on Religious Schools. Additionally, she briefly led the Temple Beth-El in Pensacola, Florida, in the 1960s, further solidifying her position as a pioneering female figure in American rabbinical history. Through her work, Ackerman paved the way for future generations of women in Jewish spiritual leadership.
