Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers

Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers was a British occultist, born in 1854, who played a pivotal role in the development of modern ceremonial magic. As a key figure in the esoteric community, Mathers was a member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.), a mystical organization that explored the intersection of spirituality and the occult. His interests and expertise, however, extended beyond traditional Rosicrucianism, as evidenced by his exploration of Jewish mysticism and its associated traditions.

Mathers' most lasting legacy is his co-founding of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a influential magical society that continues to have offshoots and adherents to this day. His influence on the order was so profound that it has become closely tied to his name and reputation. As a testament to his significance, Golden Dawn scholar Israel Regardie noted that Mathers was, in many ways, synonymous with the order itself. He passed away in 1918.
