David Gilbert is an American activist born in 1944, known for his involvement in leftist movements. His early activism began with the founding of the Columbia University chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, a prominent student-led organization. Gilbert's commitment to radical change led him to become a member of the Weather Underground, a group that emerged from the SDS and advocated for revolutionary action.
Gilbert's life took a dramatic turn in 1981 when he participated in the robbery of a Brinks armored vehicle, serving as the getaway driver. The incident resulted in the deaths of two police officers and a security guard. Under New York's felony murder law, Gilbert was convicted and sentenced to 75 years to life in prison for his role in the tragic event. His conviction and imprisonment have been a significant part of his life, stemming from his involvement in the fatal robbery.
