Gusta Dawidson Draenger
Polish Jewish activist and writer
Gusta Dawidson Draenger was a Polish Jewish activist and writer, prominently involved in the resistance movement in Kraków during the late 1930s and the Nazi occupation of World War II. Under the code name Justyna, she played a significant role in the underground activities, demonstrating remarkable courage and dedication to the cause. Her experiences and reflections during this tumultuous period were meticulously documented, providing valuable insights into the lives of those who fought against oppression.
Draenger's written account, penned while incarcerated in Montelupich Prison in early 1943, serves as a testament to her unwavering spirit. Tragically, her life was cut short when she and her husband Shimshon Draenger were executed by the Nazis in November 1943. However, her legacy lived on through her memoirs, which were published posthumously in various languages. Initially released in Poland as Pamiętnik Justyny in 1946, her narrative was later translated into Hebrew and published as Jōmānā šel Jusṭina in 1974, and eventually in English as Justyna's Narrative in 1996, ensuring her story and bravery would be remembered and honored for generations to come.
