Nelly Kaplan

Argentine-born French film director and writer (1931–2020)

Nelly Kaplan was a renowned Argentine-born French film director and writer, born in 1931. Her early life took a significant turn when she decided to pursue her passion for cinema, putting her economics studies at the University of Buenos Aires on hold. This led her to travel to Paris in 1953, where she represented the new Argentine film archive at an international convention. Kaplan's experience as a journalist proved valuable, as she went on to work as a correspondent for various Argentine newspapers.

Kaplan's introduction to Henri Langlois, founder of the Cinémathèque Française, marked the beginning of her foray into the film industry. Langlois facilitated her meeting with the esteemed filmmaker Abel Gance, who offered her the opportunity to work on his film La tour de Nesle. This experience laid the groundwork for Kaplan's future endeavors in the world of cinema, ultimately leading her to become a distinguished film director and writer in her own right. She passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy that reflects her dedication to the arts and filmmaking.
