Philip R. Alstat

American Conservative rabbi, teacher, chaplain, speaker and writer

Philip R. Alstat was a prominent figure in American Judaism, serving as a Conservative rabbi, educator, and writer. Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, he immigrated to the United States in 1898, marking the beginning of his journey in American Jewish life. Alstat pursued higher education at several esteemed institutions, including the City College of New York and Columbia University, before enrolling at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS).

At JTS, Alstat received his rabbinic ordination, or semikhah, in 1920, formally establishing him as a Conservative rabbi. He went on to have a distinguished career, also serving as a teacher, chaplain, and speaker. Later in his life, Alstat was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree by JTS in 1966, a testament to his dedication and contributions to the field of Judaism. Through his work as a rabbi, educator, and writer, Alstat left a lasting impact on American Jewish communities.
